THREE MONTH CALENDAR

By using Indesign I created this three month calendar. For this project the assignment was to create a calendar for the Humane Society. We were required to have three advertisments, an image and a quote on each calendar.

Advertisments

My advertisements were all created in order to apeal to an animal loving audience. I made them bright and colorful in order to be attention grabbing. I also made them the same size in order for them to be of equal value. The advertisments were an important part of this calendar but in my opinion the most important part was the Image and the quote.

Image and Quotation

For the image I made sure to pick a variety of animals. I chose to put a picture of a dog, cat and guinea pig. Putting diffent animals rather than just three dogs was important to me becuase I think it is important for the audience to know that the Humane Society has more animals than just cats and dogs. I chose pictures and quotes that worked to benifit each other in order to make the animals more appealing. For example, for the picture of the dog I added the quote "Dogs come into our lives and leave pawprints on our hearts, find your pawprint". This quote reflects the benifit of dogs in general, as well as is an endorcement for the Humane Society.

Calendar Write-Up

When I think of a calendar I think of something clean, and well structured. That is what I tried to accomplish with this calendar. I used contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity to create a not only visually appealing calendar but also one that makes the viewer interested in the animals on the calendar.

By contrasting the colors between the dark background and the light or white writing or vise versa it makes the audience able to see and understand the words on the calendar such as the month written in white with a colored background. One of the hardest parts of the calendar were the various phrases on top of the pictures. I chose to make the words white because it contrasted the most out of any other color and was therefore the best readability.

The use of repetition allowed me to separate the ads and the calendar. I repeated the solid colored stroke around the calendar and the contrasting dashed stroke around the ads. I did this because it allowed the whole poster to be tied together because there were outlines throughout it however it also created a visible difference between the two elements of the poster (the ads and the actual calendar). Also by repeating the same color and fonts throughout the side of the calendar it is visually more appealing and more simple then if there were multiple colors.

I felt I was able to better align everything by creating all rectangles and squares. Like I said above I like simple and clean calendars. To me advertisements can sometimes create chaos in a poster but by aligning the ads together in a line I was able to accomplish the clean look that I wanted.

Finally, I used the element of proximity in the calendar with the month on the left border next to the calendar rather then the other side so that the viewer visually goes to the month first then the picture then the calendar then the ads. The purpose of a calendar is to see the month and date, however this calendar had another purpose and that was to encourage the audience to adopt pets. Because of this I wanted to put the picture on the top left, the place where ones eye goes first. Right away the viewer sees an image of a cute cuddly animal and then there eye travels to the quote in the picture about that kind of animal in the picture. This quote in the picture encourages the viewer to think about how much they want these animals.

Overall I used few colors, cute quotes and good placement in order to get a clean, calendar that contains important information that this non- profit organization would want people to know.
