PSA ADVERTISMENT

For this assignment after hearing from a speaker from the Peer Counseling Department we were to create a Public service anouncement that reflected one of the topics that she covered in her lecture. She shared information on a topics related to a college students life such as, Alcohol use, and drug use. As a result from my engagement with the speaker, Rachael McNamara, I created a PSA magazine ad that reflected college students use of drugs such as Marijuana. PSA, or Public Service Announcement, is a type of advertisement is intended to benefit the public interest, by raising awareness of an issue, affecting public attitudes, and potentially stimulating action.

PSA Ad Write-Up

I designed this anti-smoking poster to be attention grabbing and visually appealing. By keeping this image simple but incorporating attention grabbing words I was able to make a visually appealing poster as well as a poster that may make some students question their habits.

When I see posters the ones that grab my attention are those, which have something unusual and different. This is what I tried to incorporate into my poster. Usually, in anti smoking ads they consist of facts and figures. In my poster in big green letters it reads MARIJUANA. Right away that should grab attention. It is not something you see everyday. Immediately after that your eye is drawn to the smoke and illegal substance at the bottom of the page. The goal of the smoke was to make the audiences eye travel throughout the page. By looking at the smoke one is able to see powerful words such as: relationships, family, and friends. I want these words to attract interest in the audience because these words are common throughout us all. I want these words to inspire the audience to looks further at the poster and see the question posed at the bottom corner: Why take the chance to smoke it all away? To me this question inspires people to question their behavior if they currently do smoke. By seeing these words and this question in the same font and colors people immediately will incorporate them as one.

In order to keep the poster uniform I kept made it very simple. I only used three colors. Green, because people incorporate that with smoking marijuana, and a black background allowing the white words and smoke to really stand out. I centered the smoke and put it going up wards because I think that is the best visual way to bring the audiences attention to the main topic, marijuana.
